Gradient Labs makes tools, creates solutions and develops products at the intersection of communications strategy, digital media, and interactivity.

We maintain a complete digital studio, with capabilities including advanced Flash development, web site creation and software development, videography, 3D modeling, broadcast-quality video editing and compositing, motion graphics, streaming video, and DVD authoring. Though we mostly seem to be making custom web-based tools and content management systems these days.

Jason Simmons is the founder and Principal of Gradient Labs.

I founded the company in 2001 to pursue my interests in creating new ways to interact with information and media. I'm particularly interested in new narrative structures made possible by interactivity, and in designing advanced user interfaces. The web is not about pages.

Prior to founding Gradient Labs, I worked for MAYA Viz designing novel data visualization and interaction techniques for the military and healthcare industries.

I'm also an adjunct professor in the Design Department at Carnegie Mellon University. You can view some of my students' work here.

Fran Kostella is a technology professional with 20 years of professional experience architecting, designing and implementing software systems and overseeing software development teams building complex systems. Experience has run the gamut from small, single user applications for creating and editing multimedia presentations, to server applications that implement relational model databases, to distributed systems that interface with large scale enterprise databases and provide ad hoc user querying and timely visualization and exploration of complex information architectures.

Primary focus has been on providing high quality systems on time and within budget. Focus areas have been on databases, data structures, algorithms, simulations, patterns and user interface exploration. Emphasis has been on working with startups, innovative creative teams and groundbreaking software systems that span the spectrum from cutting edge, next-wave technology to the "now" technologies just coming into industry focus and with brainstorming new solutions to problems that have been considered "too hard to tackle now" by mainstream industry. Fran loves working with bright, creative individuals open to the possibilities and willing to visit the areas both inside and outside the cutting edge for inspiration but who also understand the constraints of real world systems.
